So, Ive been hearing more and more about the promise of a WoD MMO coming out sometime next year. Do I believe? Not really. Theyve been talking about a WoD MMO before the nWoD books came out and for the most part I gave up on that hope. Am I interested and excited about the possibility? Of course I am. Im a long time WtA lover (though I was never good at tabletop) and only started getting into Vampire characters. I said at the beginning, when I started getting into MMOs, that Id give up all other MMOs to play a WoD MMO. (Note: This was what I thought before nWoD came out.)
Truth be told I have many mixed feelings about it if they actually /do/ make an MMO. Part of me is so excited and anxious I can hardly stand it. But another part of me is rather disgusted and prepared for major disappointment.
The reason why I would be excited is obvious. I mean, Im not good at tabletop, having it set up for me would make it easier. Amongst players youd spend less time figuring out the math and OOC arguing in battle scenes, which opens up more time for storey telling. The visual effects and interactions would be new, fun, exciting..
But here are my thoughts why I dont have high expectations
First off, Im a oWoD lover. I love the original WtA tribes. And the only VtM clan I ever have and probably ever will play is the Malkavian. I just cant seem to fall in love with the other Clans. Perhaps because Im not big on vampires to begin with? With that said if they /do/ make a WoD MMO it will most likely be nWoD. They dont even have my beloved Malkies. And Heaven knows what they did to the Garou. And I hear even Nuwisha are extinct. (Which if such creatures really existed I would never believe the Nuwshia to ever truly be gone.) Not that theyd put Nuwisha in the MMO either way, theyre such a small part of the tabletop. I just love them so much I had to mention them. :-P lol
I am told that nWoD is not doing that great of business as a tabletop. And that oWoD is still highly loved and used. Some people think if they want the WoD MMO to do the best business they should go with oWoD. Now, Im not so sure about that. I personally would prefer oWoD but Id surely at least /try/ the game if it was nWoD. So, if they do a good enough job maybe. Still, if it was oWoD and out now Id go to the store and buy it right this second. If it was nWoD I may wait and see some reviews.
The second thing that worries me about a possible WoD MMO is how theyd manage the whole feel of the game. I do not think Id like to see nothing but vampires and werewolves running a muck and killing NPCs left and right like they do in other MMOs. The biggest thing about WoD is that, although they are powerful beings their best tactic for survival is disguising themselves, living amongst mortals/humans, hiding their true nature in the modern world. Now Ive had a couple of ideas how this could work. Though Im not so sure if it /would/ actually work as I picture it .
One would be although you have mass zones like you do in other MMOs but you also have mini-zones for a lack of a better word. Say, you enter this mini-zone through one of the mass zones but the mini-zone will only allow a number of PCs (player characters) at any given time. The majority of the zone being filled with normal human NPCs. But then that might put too much strain on things, limitation, ect . It was just a thought really.
The other thing I thought was making a massive penalty for being discovered as a werewolf or vampire, or doing mass killings for no reason. (Which can draw attention that you would not want in a city populated with hidden vampires.) Now, Im not sure how I feel about permanent deaths in MMOs. A part of me thinks itd be great and then another part of me doesnt want to loose all my damn hard work if I slip up once. So what options do we have here? If you die while in plain view of multiple mortal/human NPCs perhaps you could loose not just experience or earn debt but perhaps loose a whole skill. Perhaps you would loose renown with neighboring NPC Garou or Kindred. Or even, if you do too many random killings in plain view youd even have NPC Garou and Kindred come after you. Maybe even get a bounty on your head that other PCs can collect on by killing or capturing you. And that bounty stays on your head until youve reduced your insane killing sprees for X amount of time/days.
I suppose there are many ways they could control this but Im just not so sure.
The above brings me to the thought Im thinking as a RPGer. Which the fact of the matter is most MMOs revolve around the traditional video gamers that just want to have bigger and badder characters so they can win win win!. Which is all well and good. But WoD is a world of Rpers. Story tellers. Will the fact that WoD became a MMO kill the fact it was first a story telling RPG with character development? In WoW they have RP Servers that are supposed to be IC (in character) only. But all you find there are RP bashers and cyberwhores. I do not want my WoD environment to be like that. Do you? Will the WoD MMO team be thinking only about the MMO gamers? Will they even consider the Rpers of WoD which is the majority of WoD lovers?
And will they dummy it down to make it suitable for children? Will our vampires be drinking strawberry lemonade? (Of course I jest about the blood substitute but I hope you get the idea.)
In conclusion I guess Ill just wait. Try not to get my hopes up in case they dont make it. And if it does come to be Ill just make sure I dont have too high of expectations.
Heres hopin itll turn out epic. Cheers.
I'm sure I could think of more to ramble about this but a thunderstorm is headed our way. Heh. Take care all.
PS:
I was just thinking If they started out with say VtM, WtA and MtA If you got a Garou/Werewolf to a certain level perhaps that could unlock another of the shapeshifting breeds. Perhaps, if you got a Ragabash to level 50 or 80 or whatever the cap may be then youd unlock the Nuwisha. And if you get a Kindred/Vampire to the cap youd unlock HtR (Hunter) and if you get a Mage to the cap youd unluck CtD (Changeling). That would be awesome but then Im thinking way too far ahead. And if they /did/ do oWoD how would they handle all the tribes and clans? Perhaps thats a good reason to do nWoD since they have fewer clans/tribes? Still Id prefer oWoD
